What to do with an iPhone with a broken screen

Apple iPhones are completely reliant upon their touch screen interface, so if you drop it and the screen shatters, you will not be able to use the phone at all until you get it fixed.

The iPhone is covered by a years manufacturers warranty, but this does not cover faults caused by accidental damage. To get the screen repaired by Apples service department, you will have to pay a fee of between a hundred and a hundred and fifty pounds.

If you are feeling lucky, you could always try taking your broken iPhone into the Apple Store and have the boffins at the Genius Bar take a look at it. If you are very, very lucky, you might get it fixed on the spot for no charge, although you should not expect this to happen.

You could also consider taking your phone into a third party repair shop, and some of these may be cheaper than the official Apple service department. Expect to pay between seventy and a hundred pounds to get your cracked screen fixed.

The cheapest way to get your screen fixed is to buy a replacement screen and fit it yourself, following a YouTube tutorial. However, this is also the riskiest option, and you could cause permanent damage to your phone if you are not careful.

You can buy an entire iPhone replacement parts kit for around 150GBP, but if you just need the screen or the touch panel, you can get these as individual parts for around 30GBP each.

You could always try taking a pre bought replacement screen in with your iPhone to the Apple store, and if their technical staff are not too busy, they might just fit it for you free of charge.

If you have ever fitted an upgrade to a home computer, such as memory or a graphics card, then you can probably fit a new screen to your iPhone, although due to the small size of the unit, it is a bit trickier.
