The Pianist app for the iPhone lets you compose realistic-sounding piano pieces without the need for a piano! With its eighty-eight key virtual keyboard, soft and sustain pedals you can create tunes that are as complicated as you wish thanks to its overdub feature, and then record results.

As the name would suggest, Ocarina turns your iPhone into a virtual ocarina, which is a woodwind instrument much like the flute. All you have to do is blow into the mouthpiece while holding down various finger combinations. It is surprisingly easy to play, and even novices will be able to get a simple tune out of it without much trouble.

If the guitar is your instrument of choice then you are sure to get a lot of use out of the iPhone GuitarToolkit app. Use the metronome to keep time as you practice some of the five hundred thousand guitar chords that are loaded onto the app database, or tune up your guitar using the GuitarToolkit digital tuner.

RjDj is a fairly surreal music app that picks up sounds that are going on around the iPhone, and then incorporates them in real time with pre recorded music, using lots of weird effects. The results are actually surprisingly listenable, and you can even record them for posterity if you so wish.

Create the perfect radio station for you using the Pandora Radio app for the iPhone by choosing some starter tracks that you really enjoy. The app then looks for similar tunes and artists within its vast musical library. Skip past tracks that you do not like and Pandora Radio will soon learn what you do not like too!

It happens to us all - you hear a song on the radio, in a shop or on TV that takes your fancy, only to leave you searching as to who it is by and what it is called. Let the Shazam iPhone app do all the hard work for you by pointing your iPhone at the source of the music and it will not only tell you the song title and artist but will direct you to the iTunes store where you can download it in minutes.

Bloom is an interactive light synthesiser designed by legendary producer and keyboard maestro Brian Eno. Touching the screen produces tinkling notes and shapes that repeat to create strange visual and musical patterns over time. Mesmerising.

Beatmaker is a powerful music making app, featuring a drum machine, sampler, effects processor and sequencer, allowing you to make complex sample and loop based compositions on the move. Best of all, you can export your finished compositions to a computer, or share them with other devices via Wi Fi.
