A student budget is often a tight one. Many students must consciously watch their money while living in student apartments during university. Many students have to live off the money provided by OSAP, their saving, or money generated from a part time job. Therefore, students need to take advantage of cost savings as much as possible. The last thing you want to do is to ask your parents for money while away at school.


Students should consider using the following 11 money saving tips while living in student apartments during university:

1. Never pay for more than you need: This is particularly important for rent, cable, and internet services. Don’t rent a student apartment that is larger than you need and don’t select a cable or internet package you will not use.

2. Get a copy card: Photocopying is part of university life. Therefore, it is important to get a copy card. They can save you approximately 3 cents per copy. Considering how much photocopying the average student does, that could more a large savings over the course of 4 years.

3. Buy used books first: Always go to the used bookstore or Amazon.ca first before you buy your books. Also, make sure that every book on your reading list is going to be used before you purchase it.

4. Pack a lunch: Refrain from spending too much money on eating out. While it is tempting, it can seriously drain your bank account.

5. Grocery Shop with your roommates: Pool your resources together with your roommates and buy in bulk. Also, take the time to look for deals. Look at grocery flyers online to determine which store provides you with the best value for your dollar.

6. Turn off the lights: Turn off the lights if you are not using them. This also goes for heat and air conditioner. Be sure to turn everything off before you leave your student apartment. This will go a long way in saving you some money if you don’t live in an inclusive rental apartment.

7. Install energy savers: You know those energy saving light bulbs and shower heads your parents have, consider getting some of those. It will save you money on your electricity bill.

8. Always do full loads: Always fill your dishwasher and washing machine before doing a load.

9. Car pool: If you are travelling back home for a visit, car pool with your friends or roommates to save some money.

10. Take back your empties: empties always pile up. Take advantage of the empties that are laying around and get some extra spending money.

11. Take advantage of student discounts: Many companies offer a discount rate to students, especially in university towns. Find out what stores offer discounts and take advantages, especially when you are eating out.

Living in student apartments is not always easy. Students are often confined to a tight budget that is tough to stick to. Therefore, students need to find multiple ways to save as much money as possible while going to school.
