The Hedge Against Inflation

Trying to find financial security comes like something natural especially in times of recession or economic crisis at a global level. Most investors look for something that can help them protect what they already own and why not, put their money to work in a safe way. Unfortunately, there are not very many investment tools that can do that without endangering the financial wellbeing of the investor especially when all markets seem to go down as a global tendency.

In spite of that fact, there are a few investments that are considered to be very wise as they can protect the investor from losing money. These investments, also known for their inflation hedge role come as a protection barrier for the investor.

To understand better what the inflation hedge means we should look into the mechanism of the inflation process. The inflation takes place when the prices of services and goods go up. This results in the lower purchasing power since the same sum of money can buy less goods or services than before. Because of that, most economies choose to borrow money or mint currency. This usually results in a second round of inflation which erodes again the purchasing power. There are many other effects and consequences of the inflation process that can make things even worse.

When the purchasing power is lower, the population stops purchasing goods or services which make the vendors lower the prices too. In fact, the need to lower the prices does not come out of the vendors own will, but it is more of a necessity. This way all goods or services lose their initial value and investors lose money. However, there are some goods that have the exactly opposite trend, that is in times of economic crisis and inflation they tend to increase their value. These goods are in the category of inflation hedge.

What are the goods that can be included in this category? These are goods that have high intrinsic value like farmland, oil, natural gas and gold. In some cases the commercial real estate can be included in this category too, but only in a small degree. Among all the goods enumerated above gold is considered to be the best hedge against inflation. This is supported by the price tendency that shows a huge increase these days in spite of the inflation affecting all countries all over the world. Gold news reveals that those investors that chose to buy gold made huge profits and continue to gain from their investments.
