Fleas are amongst the more important kinds of insect nuisances as they not only cause bring on by biting, but they importantly transmit several serious medical conditions. Cat fleas are found all over the United States and the rest of the planet. Adult fleas about 1/8". Cat fleas have no wings, and their form is very anrrow in a lateral direction, (side to side). Their color is brown to black. Female fleas produce 4-8 eggs after every blood meal, During their complete lifetime, they will lay somewhere between 400-500 eggs. Eggs are elliptical, whitish in color, and only about 1/64" long. The baby larvae ordinarily hatch in 1-12 days. Flea larvae eat natural debris but almost all must consume dried fecal blood to be able to complete their development. The larvae do not bite, rather they consume blood which they obtain in adult feces. Additionally, flea larvae require elevated relative humidity (45-95º:.) Adults fleas generally begin to look for their first blood meal on the day two after coming out, but they can also live for several months on stored body fat. Once fleas are on a host, they are inclined to live on that host, feeding, mating, in addition to laying eggs, unless, of course, they are dislodged. Although fleas have a chosen host, they will readily bite humans and can survive via other species as hosts. Based on their environmental conditions fleas can live up to a year. It is important to keep in mind, that it is not essential to have pets in the home in order to have fleas infesting the home. This is since fleas will frequently fall off their host after a big blood meal. If a flea falls off a current host as the host is outside, then the flea will lay where it fell until it digests the meal. If a person should stroll by the flea, after the flea has ingested the meal, then the flea will hop up onto the human, making the human being its subsequent host. Fleas are able to lay dormant for long periods of time. Therefore if fleas have entered a residence and the dwelling becomes dormant; for example, lets say the the homeowners go on a protracted holiday or the owner sells the residence, then the fleas will hibernate in the locale where they fell off their previous host. Once the old or current family returns to the dwelling, the fleas will be aroused from their hibernation and spring onto their new hosts. They will actually pick up their life cycle from where it left off. For this reason, a family buying a new home cannot assume that because the house has been unoccupied for a long time that there are no fleas. |
