For most people in an economic crisis, the idea of trying to save money borders on the ridiculous. Even if they have lost most of their savings, they do not see any way to start rebuilding it when there are bills to be paid and food to be put on the table. Here are some important tips to guide you in saving money in an economic crisis.

Most people feel like it is not worth saving if they cannot save at least $50 at a time. That is not true when you realize that even a penny has value and can help in saving money. Together as a couple, determine the minimum amount that you will set aside every time you get a paycheck. It does not matter how small the amount is, just make sure that you consistently set it aside.

Walk through your home and take note of everything in it that is costing you money. Sit down with your family and discuss ways that you can trim expenses. For example, you can save considerably on your electric bill by keeping all of the lights turned off in your home in the evening except for one. Choose a place where everyone can gather to do their evening activities.

There are several things you can do in the laundry room to cut back. Instead of purchasing dryer sheets, purchase a liquid fabric softener and a spray bottle. Mix half fabric softener and half water in the bottle. Spray this onto an old sock and throw it into the dryer in place of a dryer sheet.

Make sure that everything in your home that is electric is unplugged when it is not in use. This includes televisions, radios, lamps and all appliances. Anytime an item is plugged in it is using a small amount of electricity that adds up over a long period of time.

Encourage everyone to be in the family room during the evening ours. Keep all of the other lights turned off in the house. If there is an activity that cannot be done there, then try to make sure only one other light is on.

The kitchen is another place that you can save a considerable amount of money. Make sure that all appliances that are not being used are unplugged. Anything that is plugged in is automatically using a small amount of electricity.

Stop using small appliances as much as possible, and begin doing things by hand. For example, you can chop vegetables and grate cheese or veggies by hand instead of using a food processor. The less you use appliances the more money you save.

Most families can save a considerable amount of money on groceries if they make a menu for the week before they make a grocery list. Make sure you shop after you have eaten a satisfying meal. Resist the temptation to purchase an item just because it looks good.

These important tips will help you start saving money in an economic crisis. Make it a game to see how much you can save in every room of your home. When your savings begins to grow again, the entire family will be excited.
